Rediscovering Salford

Rediscovering Salford is a 2021 creative programme that looks again at Salford’s cultural identity through engagement with its green spaces. Using the opening of RHS Bridgewater as a catalyst, this ambitious, cross-city programme looks at our parks, gardens, green and blue spaces as ‘cultural spaces’.

These are spaces we’ve shared through boom and bust, hardship and celebration, and always amidst unrelenting change. Rediscovering Salford brings partners across the city together around a plan of exhibitions, public artworks and event. From May onwards, 2021 and Rediscovering Salford will bring opportunities to learn, make, connect and celebrate with others, in and beyond our city.

Rediscovering Salford is led by the Salford Culture and Place Partnership, the University of Salford Art Collection, Salford City Council, Salford Museum and Art Gallery, RHS Garden Bridgewater, and The Lowry. We are also working with Islington Mill, Paradise Works, START Creative, and Walk the Plank. This programme is generously supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, as well as contributions from all the project partners.

The 2021 programme will include a new public artwork for Peel Park and Buile Hill Park, created by British artist Laura Daly to explore the sites of lost bandstands with an immersive sound installation. Four Salford-based professional artists have created new commissioned works exploring the history and legacy of Salford’s green and built heritage. Jack Brown explores the secret paths and routes across our parks while drag artist Cheddar Gorgeous will make amazing new wearable creations based on Salford history. Hilary Jack builds birdhouses based on the local architecture of Salford; University of Salford alumni Lizzie King explores Peel Park’s history through printmaking and photography.  Workshops and projects around brass bands, green woodworking, youth-led social justice, and creative explorers will animate the summer and autumn 2021 programme as well.
